Questions & Answers

The StableHand

Whether it's going to be indoors, outdoors or a combination of the two, arena construction is a function of space, individual needs, local climate, and financial resources.

A world class equestrian center and a backyard round pen both share a common trait - proper planning. That may seem obvious, but it is all too easy to clear out a spot in the woods and call it an arena. That is only a small portion of what is necessary to build a safe, long lasting, enjoyable riding area.

Things to think about:
  • Grading to optimize your land and limit fill materials
  • Drainage
  • How important is the subbase?
  • What types of footing best suit my needs?
  • Wood or metal trusses?
  • Straight walls or slanted?
  • Spectator seating areas
  • Watering options
  • How tall does my covered arena need to be?
  • What type of lighting is best for an outdoor arena?
  • What about an indoor arena?
  • Planning for truck access after it is finished
