How high should I mount our metal hay feeders?

Typically, bar style metal hay feeders are mounted at a height that enables the owner to throw a flake of hay into them without having to reach too far. If they are installed lower than this, the horse may be able to pull the hay from the top of the feeder, thereby defeating the feeders purpose. Horses will eat comfortably from the feeder at the proper height, even though the owners first instinct might be that horses naturally feed from the ground. Mounting the feeders too low can also enable a hoof to get stuck between the bars, making proper mounting height a crucial safety factor.

Respiratory concerns should not be a factor if the hay is good quality and it is properly stored to prevent mold from forming. To be safe, you should always check with your vet about any issues concerning your horses health.
